American bass-baritone. He is a graduate of Yale University and was a member of the Ryan Opera Center at Lyric Opera of Chicago, where he made his professional debut. In 2003, he won the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions. He has performed on many of the world's most prestigious stages, including the Bavarian State Opera (Bayerische Staatsoper) in Munich, the Opéra Bastille in Paris, the Dutch National Opera in Amsterdam, the Metropolitan Opera in New York, the Canadian Opera Company in Toronto, the Los Angeles Opera, the San Francisco Opera, the Santa Fe Opera, and the Salzburg Festival.
Some of his most notable roles include Figaro in Le Nozze di Figaro (The Marriage of Figaro), Escamillo in Carmen, the four villains in Les Contes d'Hoffmann (The Tales of Hoffmann), and Mephistopheles in both Gounod's Faust and Boito's Mefistofele. He performed the role of Mephistopheles at the Metropolitan Opera in Robert Carsen's celebrated production.
In 2012, he collaborated with the musicAeterna orchestra under the baton of Teodor Currentzis to record Le Nozze di Figaro for the Sony Classical label. In 2017, he took part in the American premiere of Thomas Adès's opera The Exterminating Angel at the Metropolitan Opera.
